Ruby & Sapphire
Sarah J. Andrew with illustrations by Cyndi Harris and photographs by Nancy Hopkins February 3, 2000
This article is one in a series on the supposed healing properties of certain minerals when worn as jewelry or when handled. While you may not believe stones have energy, consider that you could not operate your computer without the energy of quartz. Electronics exist because of the absolute predictability of the energy properties of quartz. These articles do not promise that these stones can heal; if you have a medical problem, consult a medical practitioner. The drawings, photographs and words are prepared as sources of information and focus points for meditation.
The aluminum rich rock had cooled many centuries before the transformation began. Deep inside the earth, magma (molten rock of several thousand degrees Celsius) had forced itself upwards heating the crust again, pushing the hardened outer surface of earth until all began moving again. Metamorphosis had begun and only that which was impermeable to heat and pressure would survive. The rocks of the surface would be pushed together in an unrelenting pressure that would go on until the magma cooled and retreated back downward.

Some minerals had been squeezed out of their surrounding rock to emerge stronger and resistant to further change. Some rocks would have virtually merge with one another, exchanging elements to form a boundary of new minerals. Some minerals trapped within would have transform into larger versions of what had been. All of these newly formed minerals are called tertiary minerals.

In certain areas, the magma would have forced itself upward ripping apart the changing rocks and filling the crevices. In other places, the magma had broken through to the surface, erupting into a volcanic mass. As the magma cooled and again retreated, the vent could continue to be a passage way for hot gasses that would continue interacting with the surrounding rock, continuing the process of metamorphosis.

In the end, there would be rubies and sapphires because the rock had been rich in aluminum.Ruby Energy, drawing by Cyndi Harris and photographed with stones by Nancy Hopkins, 21C-Online. Some formed in the vents. Some formed as the magma cooled and changed inside the crevices. Some formed inside the rocks as chemicals were squeezed out of the rock to collect as the mineral. Both ruby and sapphire are tertiary minerals belonging to the corundum family. The difference in color comes from the iron and titanium in sapphire and chromium in ruby.

Triagonal Crystal System, graphic by Sarah J. Andrew, 21C-OnlineRegardless of manner, the growth of a ruby or sapphire would have begun with formation of a single "seed crystal". A crystal is a solid body with a predefined geometric shape that is repeated over and over again, growing in an unrelenting crystal lattice. In the case of the corundum family of ruby and sapphire, the crystal shape is based upon a triangular inner shape that grows into hexagonal pillars.

THE ENERGIES OF RUBY AND SAPPHIRE
The idea that energies are contained within all minerals is a fact. The following discussion is based upon the concept that minerals release their energies into the human electro-magnetic field, providing missing, depleted, or needed energies by the human being. While this concept is contained within many ancient cultures, the modern medical establishment has not indorsed such a concept. Anyone with health problems should consult their medical practitioner.
RUBY: The first thing I was told concerning the powers of ruby was that you do not want to be near one if you like the status-quo. Forgetting this warning, I gave a wonderful natural ruby crystal to a friend along with one for her husband. Within the month their fifteen-year old marriage was over. Ruby power? I cannot be sure; but, I have never given anyone another ruby.

Tertiary minerals such as ruby and sapphire were transformed out of rock that already existed. The transformation energy is carried inside them both. If pressures inside you are striving for a metamorphic change, ruby or sapphire or some other tertiary mineral will come into your life. It is the type of change you are striving for that dictates which mineral will help.

Red shakes things up in a fast, heated manner and promotes immediate and often drastic changes. Inner fires are fueled and desires are strengthened to the point of action. If you need to be forceful, red will take you there. If you need inner courage and mobility, the road is paved in red. Of all minerals, ruby is imbued with the darkest and brightest red. If you want to transform into someone entirely different, immerse yourself in ruby energy. If you need to shatter the barriers limiting your mental, spiritual, and emotional bodies, follow the red sun .

While dissolution of a marriage would seem drastic, continuation in a life of self-lies is a waste. Because ruby is the dominant mineral of the Heart Chakra, a person working with ruby cannot lie to him/herself. Self love is promoted by ruby and you cannot lie to someone you love in a way that incorporates divine love, divine understanding. Ruby shatters illusions, provides a source of compassion for oneself andRuby in maitrix, photograph by Nancy Hopkins, 21C-Online. for others, and instills a knowingness that there is a divine plan - a plan based upon divine love.

Ruby in raw form from North Carolina, USA, photograph by Nancy Hopkins, 21C-Online.As ruby stimulates the physical heart by opening up and balancing the Heart Chakra, the energized circulatory system begins to promote change at the cellular level. The cells transform first and then the physical organs. As a physical body healer, ruby works slowly by going to the very root of a problem and shattering old patterns of growth and disease.

SAPPHIRE: While the red ruby works from the inside out, its sister sapphire works to break outside barriers. Blue induces calm and surety that all is well. Blue signifies the power of God; and, under the influence of any blue mineral will come the ability to move outside obstacles without much effort and certainly without making a scene. If you feel the need of a little personal breathing space, blue is the way to go.

As a tertiary mineral, sapphire invokes a transition. This transition is, however, one on the outside. If you feel comfortable with who you are, but feel limited by the people around you, your home, your job, or any outside influence, sapphire power will effortlessly allow you to transform those limiting barriers. And, because the power to change these outside limitations originates outside of yourself, from the realm of God Power, the changes will benefit everyone with whom you come in contact .

On the physical plane, sapphire brings the power to enhance other outside energy sources which can aid in direct healing of the physical body. Other minerals, herbs, flower essence, elixirs, homeopathic aids, or even a new mental outlook all work better when sapphire energy is added to the equation. Sapphire brings fluidity to the physical body, allowing the glands, digestion, and other systems to flow freely, because the etheric energy system (chakras, meridians and nadis) is energized under sapphire's influence.
