WINDOWS INSIDER: BEWARE MELISSA VARIANTS
by Valerie Ryan, November 5, 1999
Remember Melissa, that harmless (but rampant) virus that spread itself via e-mail last spring? There are two new variants on the loose, and these little buggers can actually do some damage.
If activated, Melissa.U, the more prevalent of the two new viruses, will delete necessary system files; while Melissa.V will delete files and directories on shared drives. Both viruses spread themselves via e-mail file attachments, just like the original, appearing to have been sent by a friend. To protect yourself, if you receive an e-mail "from a friend" with the subject, "pictures" or "My Pictures" (possibly followed by a Word 97 or Word 2000 user name), don't open its attachments. And of course, always update your anti-virus software regularly.
AND FOR ALL THOSE THAT SEND ATTACHMENTS OF JOKES AND STUFF FROM OTHER FRIENDS....THE TRICK TO SEND THE JOKE BUT NOT AS AN ATTACHMENT OF AN ATTACHMENT AND SO ON....OPEN THE EMAIL TO THE FRIST PAGE...FROM THERE FORWARD IT .... U CAN DELETE ALL OTHER EMAILS THAT ARE THERE FROM PREVIOUS FORWARDS AND ADD UR OWN MESSAGE OR WHATNOT...THIS PROTECTS EVERYONE RECEIVING THESE FUN JOKES OR WHATEVER EMAILS....PLEASE LEARN TO DELETE FORMER EMAIL ADDRESSES AS THIS CAN LEAD TO VIRUSES AS THE MELISSA.....
