When George Morikami emigrated from Miyazu, Japan he came to a much different environment. Much of the South Florida landscape was still covered in the pine forest. There are a variety of pine trees that grow in South Florida and I cannot tell you which variety we are looking at. Most of the early buildings were built from the surrounding pine forests, throughout South Florida.

While there is a wild bamboo that grows naturally in Florida, I suspect the trees to the right are not native. There were a number of fences that were built with bamboo and it was wonderful to see the trees alive. The path that surrounds the lake can be seen in the foreground.

Below you can see two of the bridges that demonstrate the wonderful woodworking you encounter throughout the park. The last picture is of a wonderful gate that greets you early in the walk. There you see the typical tourists and my buddies Cyndi, Wil, and Skip Harris. Will and Skip took a tour of the Orient last year - even walked a section of the Great Wall of China - and have been inspired by Oriental Gardens. Skip is even looking into Feng Shui which deals with enhancing your entire environment by paying attention to invisible forces that surround us.

There are invisible forces at work in Morikami. They are natural and manmade. The shrubs, trees, water, bridges, gates...all weave their magic for a wonderful day. Bring the family and the camera. You will be better for it.
