The carp and turtles from our first visit were still there and even bigger. They were swimming in the same water where we had seen them in 1999. But, the shores had been beautified and an island was now there that appeared to be home to the wonderful Anhinga.

The Anhinga is a Florida resident called the "snakebird" because only its head and neck are visible when it is swimming. When seen soaring, it looks like a cross. The short legs and webbed feet are often found hanging on to a tree branch overhanging freshwater lakes, streams, or marshes. With no oil gland for waterproofing, the Anhinga spends much time holding out its wings to dry in the Florida sun. The bird is noted for its long tail. There is a greenish gloss to the black of the male Anhinga.

The large carp are probably safe from the bird which stabs its fish dinner in the side before flipping it into the air and catching it head first in its mouth for swallowing. The colorful carp are called Koi and have been central to many Japanese gardens. The hobby of Koi collecting and breeding can be rewarding, as they are fairly hardy. The most desirable Koi can cost many hundreds of dollars, although Koi is also eaten and consider quite wonderful.
