NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM INFORMATION...
Nancy Hopkins, November 16, 2000
In South Florida, everyone lives in a Flood Zone. (See "Florida's
Delicate Balance Between Disaster and Catastrophe"
.)
You never know when the boot in the flood waters will be on
your foot. See our article on what to do in a disaster

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) can be used by renters and
home owners to cover loss of contents from floods. And, a homeowner in
South Florida would use them to insure their home for up to $250,000 in flood
losses. Do not underestimate the cost of replacing everything you own. Your
"Home Insurance" will not cover flood damage. Flood Insurance is a
completely separate policy, although you can get it from the same insurance
company holding your Home Insurance.
Flood insurance policies cost a little more than $300 a year for about $100,000 of coverage. However, be very careful to see how much coverage is being offered for the CONTENTS. The ratio of contents coverage versus home coverage does not carry over when getting the flood insurance. When we first put on the flood insurance, we had $5000 in content coverage. NOT ENOUGH. We now have $20,000 in content coverage, and am paying another $100 more per year - well worth it.
There is normally a 30-day waiting period before coverage goes
into effect. DO NOT DELAY. Call your Insurance Agent and get
your NFIP coverage today on your credit card. Or see
